Essential LVP Installation Guide

1. Subfloor Prep

Make sure your subfloor is perfectly flat, clean, and dry. Following ASTM F1700 standards for floor flatness is crucial, as even small bumps can eventually cause your new click-lock joints to break.

2. Acclimation

Acclimate vinyl planks for at least 48 hours. This prevents gaps in your newly installed floors.

3. Expansion Gap

Always leave about a 1/4" gap around the edges of the room. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature changes, and this gap prevents the floor from buckling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much waste should I calculate for LVP?

You should always add at least 10% to your total room size. This covers mistakes, tricky corner cuts, and leaves a few spare planks for any future repairs.

Can I install vinyl planks over tile?

Yes, provided the tile is flat and grout lines aren't too deep. Otherwise, telegraphing may occur. For more on resilient flooring, consult the RFCI official guide.

Is underlayment required for LVP?

Many modern vinyl planks come with a padded layer already attached to the back. If yours doesn't, you'll need to buy a separate underlayment to reduce noise and protect against moisture (especially over concrete).

How long does LVP flooring last?

High-quality LVP can last 15-25 years. Wear layer thickness (measured in mils) is the primary indicator of long-term durability against foot traffic.
