How to Use the Tile & Grout Calculator

1

Step 01

1. Measure Area

Enter your room's total area in square feet. Don't forget to subtract the space taken up by large fixtures like tubs, islands, or cabinets.

2

Step 02

2. Select Tile Size

Enter the exact width and length of your tiles. Keep in mind that tiny mosaic tiles will use up way more grout than large format slabs!

3

Step 03

3. Get Shopping List

Review your results. We'll give you a practical shopping list with the number of tiles, plus estimated bags of mortar and grout.

Standard Tiling Guidelines

Tile Format (Inches) Baseline Waste Recommended Joint Typical Application
12 x 12 8% 1/8" Standard Residential Floors
24 x 24 10% 3/16" Modern Large Living Spaces
6 x 24 (Wood-look) 12 - 15% 1/16" Complex Planking Patterns

Essential Professional Guidelines

1. Subfloor Prep

According to ANSI A108 standards, large-format tile substrates require a maximum surface deviation of less than 1/8" in 10 feet. Level floor dips beforehand.

2. Color Shading Lots

Always buy boxes labeled with the same batch/caliber code. Different manufacturing lots regularly deviate in physical dimensions and slight tonal color shades.

3. Expansion Joints

Plan perimeter gaps and internal flexible expansion joints every 20 to 25 feet. This safely stops ceramic layers from tenting or breaking due to natural concrete slab shifting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many lbs of grout per sq ft?

Average consumption typically ranges from 0.1 to 0.2 lbs per sq ft. Small mosaic tiles will always require much more grout weight than large 24x24 slabs because you have way more joint lines to fill per square foot.

What is the 'Tile Caliber'?

The caliber is the actual finished size of the tile after it leaves the firing kiln[cite: 153]. High temperatures cause clay to shrink, so a nominal 12x12 tile might actually measure 11-7/8"[cite: 153]. Always double-check the caliber codes stamped on your boxes before mixing lots[cite: 153].

Can I install tiles over a wood subfloor?

As a general rule, you should never tile directly over bare wood. Plywood flexes and expands with humidity, which instantly cracks tiles and crumbles grout. Installing an approved cement backer board or uncoupling membrane is highly recommended, but always verify your subfloor deflection matches industry ANSI A108 standards before proceeding.

Why buy 10% extra material?

We strongly recommend adding a 10% waste factor to your project[cite: 154]. You will inevitably lose material to corner cuts, waste layout profiles, and accidental breakages[cite: 154]. Plus, having a few spare tiles from the exact same dye lot is crucial for future repairs[cite: 154].
