1. Cushion Padding Rules
Never skip or skimp on underlayment padding. A quality cushion
absorbs foot traffic shock, protecting the carpet backing from
premature degradation. Residential areas typically require a
minimum density of 6 to 8 lbs per cubic foot, but always verify
the specific thickness requirements mandated by your carpet
manufacturer's warranty.
2. Power Stretching & Seams
According to CRI 105 industry installation standards, wall-to-wall
carpet must be mechanically stretched using a power stretcher, not
just a knee-kicker. Improper stretching leads to wrinkles,
shifting, and rapid wear. Ensure seam tape is heated evenly to
prevent joint separation down the road.
3. Acclimation & Subfloor
Unroll and acclimate the carpet in the target room for at least 24
hours prior to laying. The indoor environment must be fully
conditioned between 65°F and 85°F. The underlying subfloor must be
structurally sound, sweep-clean, and completely dry to avoid mold
risks under the padding layer.
