Quick Visual Guide

Step 01

1. Enter Dimensions

Measure your room at its widest and longest points. We suggest rounding up slightly to ensure you cover the entire floor area before making cuts.

2

Step 02

2. Choose Waste Factor

Pick 10% for standard straight rows. If your room has alcoves, sharp angles, or you plan a diagonal layout, we recommend 15% to cover tricky cuts.

Installation Guidelines (Based on ASTM Standards)

1. Subfloor & Blueprints

Before installing, check your blueprints for floor levelness. According to ASTM F1066 standards, subfloors must be free of moisture and debris.

2. Underlayment Choice

In most multi-story apartments, high-quality sound-dampening underlayment is highly recommended. Use 6-mil poly film for concrete slabs.

3. Expansion Gaps

Maintain a 3/8" expansion gap. Laminate is a floating floor; it requires space to move with seasonal humidity changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should laminate flooring acclimate before installation?

Laminate planks generally need at least 48 hours to adjust to your room's temperature and humidity, which helps minimize post-installation buckling or gaps. Keep the boxes sealed and lay them completely flat on the floor—never lean them against a wall, as this can cause warping. Always consult your specific flooring manufacturer's installation manual to ensure compliance with ANSI standards.

Why is a 10% waste factor necessary for square footage?

Material is naturally lost every time you cut a plank to fit corners, doorways, or heating pipes. A 10% safety margin is the industry standard to prevent running short during installation. For herringbone or complex diagonal patterns, a 15% allowance is typically recommended due to the heavy angle cuts.

Can I install new laminate planks over existing carpet?

As a general rule, installing laminate over residential carpet is not recommended. Soft, plush surfaces allow too much vertical movement, which can eventually crack or break the click-lock joints. Always check your specific laminate manufacturer’s instructions, as installing over unauthorized subfloors typically voids your material warranty.

How many boxes should I buy if my calculation is between counts?

We recommend rounding up to the nearest whole box. If your layout requires 12.2 boxes, purchasing 13 is the safest approach. Having extra planks left over is highly beneficial for any future board replacements or unexpected repairs down the road.
